June takes its name from Junius, derived from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, motherhood, and protection. As the wife of Jupiter, Juno was regarded as a guardian of women, أطفال, and all those in need of shelter and care. It is meaningful that a month historically associated with protection and companionship also coincides with the brightest period of the year in our hemisphere, when the days reach their greatest length and nature seems to express itself in all its fullness.
June invites us to open ourselves to light, to encounters, and to the celebration of life. Perhaps this is why the activities we have shared over these past weeks have been marked by values that resonate deeply with this symbolism: care, teaching, reflection, listening, and accompanying those who need it most.
There is a well-known reflection attributed to anthropologist Margaret Mead. When asked what she considered to be the first sign of human civilization, many expected an answer related to tools, weapons, or great discoveries. بدلاً من, Mead pointed to a broken femur that had healed.
Her explanation was simple yet profound: in nature, an animal with a severe fracture is unlikely to survive. A healed bone indicates that someone remained by its side, protected it, provided food and care until recovery was possible. For Mead, civilization begins when we become capable of caring for one another.
This reflection remains deeply relevant today. Caring, المرافقة, listening, and extending a hand to those experiencing difficult moments are among the most profoundly human acts that exist. Perhaps this is why many of the experiences we have lived during this month have revolved around these very values—values that unite us and remind us of the best aspects of our shared humanity.
This month of June has gifted us with very special moments that reaffirm the meaning of our work and remind us of the importance of continuing to build spaces for encounter, reflection, and support.
Over these weeks, we have carried out various educational activities with students, sharing knowledge, تجارب, و, قبل كل شيء, planting questions that invite us to view life, illness, and caregiving from a more human and conscious perspective. Every encounter with students is an opportunity to transmit values that go beyond academic training and are rooted in empathy, listening, and caring for others.
One of the highlights of the month was the conference delivered by Dr. Luján Comas at the Official College of Physicians of Lleida. The reception was extraordinary. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to this institution for its exceptional hospitality and for the interest shown in the topics addressed.
The audience was diverse and enriching. Participants included physicians, therapists, healthcare professionals, care managers, and hospital administrators from the region. The dialogue that followed the conference revealed a growing awareness of the need to humanize healthcare and provide comprehensive support to people facing illness, suffering, or the end of life.
It was especially encouraging to see how an increasing number of professionals are dedicating time, energy, and resources to initiatives related to accompaniment, grief support, addressing unwanted loneliness, and caring for the most vulnerable members of society. Knowing that we share this path with so many committed individuals fills us with confidence and encourages us to continue our work.
Another of the month’s most moving moments took place during a beautiful encounter with Luján in the chapel associated with the apparition of the Child Virgin to a group of shepherd children. In an atmosphere of profound serenity, we shared an intimate and reflective conversation about spirituality, the transcendence of the human being, the deep meaning of life and respect for it, as well as the importance of accompanying those who are going through difficult times.
Beyond words, it was one of those encounters that leaves a mark difficult to describe. The simplicity of the place, the shared silence, and the authenticity of our conversations reminded us that, more often than not, the most transformative spaces arise from nature, silence, human closeness, and our capacity to truly listen to one another.
As I reflect on all that we have experienced this month, I believe that this work is a way of expressing gratitude for life itself—a way of living and feeling profound thankfulness. Gratitude toward those who participate in our activities, toward the professionals who promote projects of support and accompaniment, and toward all those who, discreetly and often silently, dedicate part of their lives to accompanying people who are lost, lonely, ill, or grieving.
We live in complex times, but also in times when initiatives filled with humanity continue to emerge. We are proud to be part of an ever-growing community of people committed to alleviating suffering, offering companionship, and reminding us that no one should face life’s most difficult moments alone.
We will continue working with enthusiasm to create new spaces for encounter, تعلُّم, and support. Because every act of care matters. Because every conversation can open a door to hope. And because, في النهاية, what truly remains is the mark we leave on others and the love we receive.
